Equine Herpes Virus
There are 2 equine herpes viruses of significant importance, EHV-1 and EHV-4. EHV-1 causes respiratory disease, abortion and weakness, EHV-4 causes respiratory disease only. Vaccination is possible against both viruses. The immunity is short lived so a vaccinated horse requires a booster every 6 months after the initial course of 2 injections. The vaccination is recommended for all pregnant mares and when an outbreak of either virus is known in the area. Special vaccination regimes are recommended for pregnant mares. If you phone the practice we will be happy to offer further guidance.
